Club Email! Term 1, week 2.

Good evening Warwick Lacrosse,

It’s been another busy week for lacrosse so here’s a quick recap of anything you missed during the week and a heads up for what to expect this week.

This Wednesday saw the start of the BUCS leagues for all 4 of our BUCS teams. It was great to see all our teams out in force with some great support from the sidelines, it certainly made us fight that little bit more!

Match Reports:

Women’s 1st:

The women’s 1st came out of the blocks early taking the game to Birmingham and building an early lead however Birmingham showed their experience bringing it to a one goal advantage to them at half time. Unfortunately though, due to some dispute from Birmingham over the scoreline, we lost our heads a little in the second half and Birmingham showed their physical strength (demonstrated by some impressive bruises on our side!). It was a promising game however with a great show from all the fresh with our MVP going to Charlotte Hampton for some great spacing in attack.

Men’s 1st:

The newly promoted men’s 1st had a difficult introduction to the higher league and struggled to gain possession in the first half. However the team gathered themselves at half time and came out fighting but luck wasn’t on their side with Yonnys cannon rattling the post approximately 6 times and John’s first shot on target in 4 years failing to find the back of the net. - Salmon

Women’s 2nds:

On Wednesday, the 2s started their BUCS season with a home game against the Birmingham 3s. In the first half we went from strength to strength with the score being 3-2 to Warwick at half time. Birmingham came back with a vengeance in the second half and despite some very strong defense from our 2s, the final score was 8-4 to Birmingham. The result doesn’t reflect how close the game was and we really demonstrated everything we had covered in preseason, it was great to see it all come together against a strong opposition. Our MVP was Hetty Melrose for an amazing debut as goalie. All in all it was a great start to the season. - Alannah

Men’s 2nds:

Fielding a team full of fresh faces, we had an encouraging start to the season against Coventry 1s. Although the score line did not reflect it, it was a close fought match, with Warwick 2s dominating possession throughout the game. Man of the match goes to fledgling LSM Sam Pearson. - Louie

Mixed:

On Sunday Warwick Mixed Lacrosse played a strong Cambridge side at home in our first game of the season. It was great to see such fantastic turnout with a squad of over 20 players, many of which were new to the sport. Unfortunately we lost 2-10 with Jack Guise and Charlotte Hampton breaking through the Cambridge defence to score our 2 goals. It was a great effort and start to the season with lots of talent to build upon in training over the next few weeks. - Ben

Moving forwards though, we look to a fresh week of training, matches and circle.

BUCS Fixtures

This week sees all our BUCS teams travelling away for their games;

Men’s 1st vs Cambridge

Women’s 1st vs Cambridge

Men’s 2nd vs Staffordshire

Women’s 2nd vs Loughborough

(Team captains will let you know coach pick up times later in the week.)

This coming Saturday will see Abdi lead the men’s SEMLA team into their first game of the season against Plymouth. Our SEMLA team sports a mix of experienced players and beginners. For those of you new to the sport there’s no better way of learning the game than playing a match so speak to Abdi if you’re interested in playing. Even if you’re not playing, come on down to Cryfield pitches at 2pm and cheer the lads on!!

SWWLA (the women’s equivalent) does not start their league until the 29th Oct but is equally a great way for beginners and experienced players alike to grab that extra game time. Speak to Anne if you are interested in playing!

Good luck to all teams, smash it and bring home the bacon!

Circle

Wednesdays circle was another resounding success with everyone turning out in their finest bed sheets for toga circle. As a few freshers soon realised, turning up late does not go down well so be warned for the rest of term!

Well that’s all for now folks!! With all our teams having tough opening games this week everyone is putting extra in at training so we thought we’d leave you with this:

-Aristotle
